  • SAPA Explores Potential Collaboration with Tunku Abdul Rahman University College

    Kota Kinabalu, Sabah – Representatives from the Sabah Association of Professional Accountants (SAPA) recently visited Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) in a bid to explore future collaboration opportunities. The visit was aimed at fostering closer ties between the accounting profession and academic institutions, with a focus on professional development, education, and research in the field of accounting.

    During the visit, SAPA representatives met with Wendy Chu Wen Tyng, Branch Head and Accounting Faculty lecturers from TAR UC, discussing potential partnerships that could provide students with valuable exposure to the accounting industry. The collaboration could include internships, training programs, joint research initiatives, and other avenues for strengthening the educational framework for future accountants.

    “This visit marks the beginning of an exciting opportunity to create a stronger link between academic learning and practical industry experience,” said Datuk Tan, President of SAPA. “By working together with TAR UC, we hope to enhance the skill sets of students and professionals, helping them stay ahead in the rapidly changing world of accounting.”

    The visit was followed by a tour of the university’s facilities, where SAPA representatives were briefed on the latest academic programs and research developments. The potential collaboration will be explored further in the coming months, with discussions continuing between both parties.

  • Meeting with Ministry Of Finance (MOF)

    KOTA KINABALU (Jan 16): State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun has teamed up with the Sabah Association of Professional Accountants (SAPA) to boost state revenue and support local professionals.

    Following a recent visit from SAPA, led by chairman Datuk Tan Kok Liang, a joint working group will develop policy proposals focusing on five key areas:
    • Stricter Enforcement: Strengthened enforcement of work pass regulations and trading licenses, including mandatory immigration work passes (pending Cabinet approval).
    • Local Expertise First: Prioritizing Sabah-based accountants and firms in partnerships with outside professionals.
    • Auditor Rotation: Reviewing a proposal to rotate auditors for government-linked companies every seven years.
    • Local Procurement: Exploring local content requirements or partnerships in government procurement of financial services.
    • SAPA Expertise: Utilizing SAPA’s expertise in financial, fiscal and economic development.

    Masidi praised SAPA’s practical recommendations and emphasized the importance of ongoing professional development for its members.

    The joint working group will submit a comprehensive policy proposal to the State Cabinet.

    Masidi reiterated the need for improved financial literacy among businesses and the public sector.

    Tan also expressed confidence in SAPA’s role in strengthening the accounting profession in Sabah and looked forward to collaborating with the government and other stakeholders.
